Granada Rattled by 5.0 Magnitude Earthquake

Residents of Granada, a popular tourist destination in southern Spain, experienced a shocking wake-up call early Saturday morning, August 15, 2026, when a 5.0-magnitude earthquake struck the region. The quake, centered in Alhendin, approximately six miles from Granada, rattled homes shortly after 1:00 a.m.
Emergency services reported no casualties or serious structural damage, including to the historic Alhambra palace, a UNESCO World Heritage site. However, some buildings sustained cracks, and debris littered the streets.
Antonio Sanz, the Andalusian region's emergency chief, shared that the fire department received around 300 calls and conducted 85 interventions across the city and its suburbs. He reassured the public, stating, "There is no serious structural damage, no serious material damage, and there are no casualties." Nonetheless, Sanz emphasized the need for vigilance as aftershocks could occur and inspections of buildings were underway.
Local resident Marta Mayorga Fernandez described the shaking as intense, recounting how it startled her awake and left her feeling anxious.
