Guinea-Bissau Begins Vote Counting in Referendum to Enhance Presidential Powers

In Guinea-Bissau, ballot counting has commenced following a pivotal referendum that could significantly strengthen the presidency's authority. Citizens voted on Sunday on a proposed new constitution aimed at reforming the political landscape ahead of the upcoming elections.

Idrissa Djalo, executive secretary of the National Electoral Commission, reported a voter turnout exceeding 55 percent, with the polling process free of incidents that might undermine its credibility.

This referendum follows a military coup less than a year ago, with the current military government emphasizing the need for institutional stability before the scheduled elections on December 6. The new constitution seeks to transition Guinea-Bissau from a parliamentary to a presidential system, granting the president enhanced powers over the prime minister and parliament.
