Hakainde Hichilema Secures Second Term as Zambian President Amid Economic Challenges

By Editor • August 18, 2026 • 1 min read

Zambia's President Hakainde Hichilema has secured a second term, winning approximately 60% of the vote in Tuesday's election. His campaign focused on his record of economic recovery, particularly highlighting the successful restructuring of the nation’s debt.

The 64-year-old leader, who previously faced five electoral defeats before unseating Edgar Lungu in 2021, now aims to further bolster Zambia’s economy, promising to double its size and create new job opportunities for citizens. However, he faces mounting criticism regarding the persistent issues of poverty and hunger, as well as accusations of stifling dissent.

During his first term, Hichilema restored relations with international lenders after Zambia defaulted on its debt in 2020. His administration has been credited with attracting investments into the vital copper sector, while also expanding social programs, such as the introduction of free secondary education for around 2.3 million children.

Despite his achievements, many citizens express concerns over the rising cost of living and food prices. Critics argue that Hichilema's corporate management style has centralized decision-making, limiting the political space for dissenting voices. Political scientist Neo Simutanyi noted that advising the president has become increasingly difficult, suggesting a lack of receptiveness to external input.

Hichilema’s approach has drawn ire from opposition leaders and civil society, who allege that his government suppresses political dissent. In 2024, Catholic bishops accused him of using law enforcement to silence opponents, echoing tactics used against him during his time in opposition. A UN report has raised alarms about the criminal justice system being manipulated to curb free expression.

In response to these allegations, Hichilema maintains that law enforcement actions against lawbreakers do not equate to a reduction in democratic freedoms. As he embarks on his second term, the president is under pressure to address both economic recovery and the political climate in Zambia.
