Trial for Tupac Shakur's Murder Begins, Accused Claims Revenge Motive

By Editor • August 18, 2026 • 1 min read

The long-awaited trial concerning the murder of famed rapper Tupac Shakur commenced in Las Vegas on Monday, nearly 30 years after his tragic death in a drive-by shooting. Duane “Keffe D” Davis stands accused of orchestrating the crime, with the prosecution alleging it was driven by revenge.

Chief Deputy District Attorney Binu Palal asserted that Davis planned the murder as retaliation for a prior confrontation involving his nephew, Orlando “Baby Lane” Anderson. Although Davis, who was arrested in 2023, did not pull the trigger, Palal emphasized his role in orchestrating the deadly act.

In a twist, Davis has previously authored a memoir, "Compton Street Legend," in which he claimed to have supplied the weapon used against Shakur. However, defense attorney Michael Sanft urged jurors to view the memoir skeptically, labeling it as “bullshit” and suggesting that it is fictional.

Day one of the trial featured testimonies from several witnesses, including police officers who responded to the scene on the night of the shooting. The case is notorious not only for Shakur's celebrity but also for its ties to the East Coast-West Coast hip-hop rivalry that gripped the 1990s.
