Holly Thomas' Comics: Blending Beauty and Grief in a Journey of Healing

Holly Thomas, a London-based illustrator, turned her emotional journey following her father's death into a vibrant comic series, Picking up a Toad. The inspiration came during a solo trip to Colombia's Andean mountains in 2023, where she documented her feelings through diary entries.

“I wrote long, flowing sentences that reflected my emotional state,” Holly recalls, channeling her grief, joy, and fear into art after returning from her travels. Her illustrations burst with color, showcasing bright pinks and greens, framed by whimsical elements like rocks with eyes and swirling trees. “It felt like the place was alive with beauty,” she reflects.

In her comics, Holly juxtaposes moments of gratitude with darker feelings, creating a rich tapestry of life’s complexities. One striking piece depicts her underground, surrounded by skulls, illustrating her confrontation with the subject of death. “Drawing about my fears helps me to cope,” she explains.

Thomas has a long history of using art to process her emotions, tracing back to childhood experiences like drawing after her goldfish's passing. Through her comics, she navigates the delicate balance of joy and sadness, ultimately finding a voice for feelings that are often difficult to express.
