ICC Condemns US Sanctions as Threats to Justice

By Editor • August 18, 2026 • 1 min read

The International Criminal Court (ICC) has voiced strong opposition to recent US sanctions imposed on its top officials, claiming they threaten the integrity of international law. On Tuesday, the Trump administration targeted ICC President Tomoko Akane and senior trial lawyer Abdoulaye Seye, asserting the court has become politicized.

In response, the ICC stated that such actions against judges and prosecutors undermine the rule of law and jeopardize the judicial process. The court, established in 2002 to address war crimes and crimes against humanity, emphasized its commitment to its personnel and the victims it serves, remaining undeterred by external pressures.

The US sanctions, which prevent the officials from entering the country or engaging in transactions within the US financial system, are part of a broader campaign linked to the ICC's investigations into Israel, a key US ally. This includes a recent arrest warrant for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu over the Gaza conflict.
