Iceland has decisively chosen to maintain its distance from the European Union, as voters rejected a proposal to restart membership negotiations in a recent referendum. The decision highlights the ongoing tension between the desire for geopolitical stability and the importance of preserving national control over the country’s lucrative fisheries.
The referendum results, announced by the National Electoral Commission, showed a clear opposition to the measure, with 52.8 percent of voters against and 47.2 percent in favor. This outcome effectively sets aside the contentious EU membership debate for the time being, over a decade after discussions were halted by a Eurosceptic government in 2008.
