Innovative Design: A Balcony That Folds and a Window That Spins

By Editor • August 27, 2026 • 1 min read

In a serene woodland near Devon, UK, sculptor Peter Randall-Page has transformed his Art Barn into a marvel of kinetic architecture, thanks to the ingenuity of his son, architect Thomas Randall-Page from Thing Studio.

The Art Barn features a remarkable folding balcony inspired by castle drawbridges. Thomas devised a vertically bi-folding mechanism that utilizes counterweights instead of suspension cables, allowing the balcony to open and close seamlessly. This innovative design employs solid steel rods that retract behind the cladding as the balcony unfolds, complemented by a large stone weight that stabilizes the structure.

Additionally, the balcony incorporates a unique, hinged goalpost handrail that neatly folds away, maintaining the sleek aesthetic of the barn. In a further display of creativity, Thomas designed a window for the Winter Studio that rotates on the coronal plane, swinging 90 degrees to disappear from view when open. This mechanism is also counterweighted, utilizing a heavy cast iron weight, ensuring smooth operation without visible hardware.
