Innovative Pavilion in Chiang Mai Combines Flood Resilience with Community Living

In response to the devastating floods that struck Chiang Mai, Thailand, in 2024, local architecture firm ROOF RAIN has unveiled a creative solution—a 27-square-meter pavilion named Sala Kin Khao. This innovative structure not only meets pressing needs for hygiene and food preparation but also fosters a sense of community.

Designed as a multifunctional space, Sala Kin Khao centers around an open kitchen that allows residents to cook alongside guests. The pavilion’s name translates to 'Dining Pavilion,' reflecting the owner's passion for cooking and social gatherings. This approach prioritizes communal living while addressing the immediate aftermath of flooding, offering a safe haven for cooking and storage.

The pavilion's design is structured around a 3 x 3-meter modular grid, utilizing locally sourced steel sections. This efficient construction minimizes waste and allows for future extensions, ensuring the building can adapt without major overhauls. Elevated 70 centimeters above ground level, the pavilion not only protects against potential floods but also creates a ventilated space beneath.

Externally, the structure features matte-black corrugated asphalt sheets, providing durability and reducing glare, while antique timber frames incorporated into the design add warmth and character. This blend of industrial materials with reused timber softens the pavilion's aesthetic, enhancing its role as more than just emergency infrastructure.

Ultimately, Sala Kin Khao is designed to withstand future challenges while serving as a vibrant living space that celebrates cooking, shared meals, and community interaction.
