Ricehouse: Pioneering Sustainable Architecture in Piedmont

Italian architectural firm Ricehouse is making waves in the building industry with its innovative approach to sustainable materials. Founded in 2016 by Tiziana Monterisi and Alessio Colombo, the studio joins the prestigious Wallpaper* Architects Directory 2026, highlighting its commitment to eco-friendly design.

Ricehouse specializes in transforming rice production by-products such as husk and straw into natural building materials. These innovations include breathable insulating plasters and lightweight panels, contributing to healthier living environments while minimizing environmental impact. "What motivates us is the possibility of giving new value to a resource that is considered a waste," the founders state.

One of their notable projects is Casa LH, a single-story home nestled in Piedmont's natural parkland. This residence incorporates rice-derived insulation between prefabricated fir panels and features bamboo decking that harmonizes with the landscape. Inside, oak furnishings add warmth and sustainability.

The house's design maximizes energy efficiency through a mechanical ventilation system and strategically placed triple-glazed windows, while its garden roof promotes biodiversity and natural thermal regulation. With Ricehouse’s focus on reimagining overlooked materials, they are crafting a future where architecture and nature coexist harmoniously.
