Innovative Ricehouse Rethinks Building Materials in Piedmont Retreat

By Editor • August 16, 2026 • 1 min read

In the heart of Piedmont, Italy, Ricehouse has crafted a remarkable example of sustainable architecture that embodies its commitment to innovation and environmental responsibility. Founded by architect Tiziana Monterisi and geologist Alessio Colombo in 2016, the firm is now recognized in the Wallpaper* Architects Directory 2026 for its unique approach to building materials derived from rice production by-products.

Casa LH, the studio's latest project, is a single-story residence nestled within a natural parkland, showcasing materials such as rice husk and straw for thermal insulation. This eco-friendly design not only minimizes waste but also enhances indoor air quality and thermal regulation. The structure features prefabricated fir panel walls, bamboo decking that harmonizes with the surroundings, and furnishings made from oak.

The house is equipped with a mechanical ventilation system for efficient heating and cooling, while its triple-glazed windows optimize solar gain. A green roof fosters biodiversity and serves as a natural thermal regulator, demonstrating Ricehouse's dedication to integrating architecture with its ecological context. As the firm articulates, their mission is to transform overlooked waste into valuable building solutions that reflect both environmental and cultural significance.
