Innovative Textiles: Lycra's Sweat-Masking Fiber and Sustainable Alternatives Take Center Stage

At the forefront of the textile industry’s evolving landscape, The Lycra Company has unveiled several cutting-edge products aimed at enhancing both performance and sustainability. During the recent Intertextile Shanghai Apparel Fabrics Autumn Edition, the company introduced COOLMAX CloakFX, a groundbreaking recycled polyester fiber designed specifically to conceal sweat while managing moisture effectively. Made entirely from recycled PET and holding the Global Recycled Standard certification, this technology is anticipated to revolutionize not only performance apparel but also workwear and everyday clothing.

“The apparel industry is built on creativity, and great ideas emerge when people with different perspectives come together,” stated Jason Wang, vice president for Asia at Lycra. The company’s focus on sustainability is evident in its diverse product offerings, including the innovative LYCRA FiT400 fiber, which delivers stretch without the use of spandex. This fiber comes in three variants—Essential, Expanded, and Elevated—while the woven version contributes to the durability of traditional fabrics.

An additional highlight is the Renewable Lycra fiber, which boasts 70 percent renewable content sourced from field corn cultivated in the American Midwest. This material aims to provide the same performance as conventional Lycra fibers while lowering the carbon footprint of garments.

Meanwhile, a team of students from the University of Texas at Austin is exploring alternatives to PFAS-based treatments in textiles. Their project, Maízein Movement, combines zein (a corn-derived protein) with beeswax to create a fabric treatment that repels water and soil. Winning the Outstanding Science Award at the 2026 Biodesign Challenge, the initiative aims to replace harmful fluorinated chemicals commonly used in textiles.

Although the Maízein Movement is still in the research phase, the team plans to pursue grants and partnerships to further develop their sustainable treatment. Standardized testing has indicated effective water resistance with limited impact on fabric appearance, but the project is yet to provide numerical performance data.

In another innovative stride, researchers at Donghua University have developed a recoverable dyeing medium that colors PET at lower temperatures than traditional methods. This experimental system, which combines water with thymol and menthol, aims to reduce the environmental impact of the dyeing process, although it remains in laboratory testing and further evaluation is necessary.

Moreover, the German Institutes of Textile and Fiber Research Denkendorf (DITF) are pioneering ways to repurpose materials from retired wind turbine blades into textile fibers. As part of the REWIND project, DITF is exploring methods to transform recovered glass and carbon fibers into yarns suitable for new applications. While this initiative holds promise for addressing waste streams, it is still in the research phase, with performance metrics and production costs yet to be disclosed.

Looking ahead, AMI is set to launch the Textiles Manufacturing Expo in conjunction with its existing Textiles Recycling Expo USA in Charlotte on April 7 and 8, 2027. This new exhibition aims to foster connections between suppliers and manufacturers, reflecting the growing intersection of textile production and recycling.
