Investigation Links Ozon's Ownership to Putin's Inner Circle

A recent probe by the Anti-Corruption Foundation reveals that Alexander Chachava, the largest shareholder of Ozon, acquired his stake through financial connections to Gennady Timchenko, a billionaire closely associated with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Ozon, recognized as Russia's second-largest online marketplace, has faced attacks on its logistics centers by Ukrainian forces, which are part of a broader strategy targeting Russian economic interests. Ukraine claims these marketplaces are involved in supplying goods for the Russian military.

The investigation highlights the purchase of a 27.7% stake in Ozon, previously held by Baring Vostok, which was transferred to Vostok Investments amid legal troubles for Baring's founder. This stake changed hands in 2024, with O23 acquiring it before being sold to entities linked to Chachava. By April 2026, these entities had increased their share in Ozon to nearly 35%.

Chachava’s financing comes under scrutiny, with reports indicating that his firm, Stratosphere Investment Group, received a substantial loan from Optima, a company tied to various associates of Putin. Notably, Optima had previously received the same amount from Delta, a Timchenko-owned entity.

The Anti-Corruption Foundation describes Timchenko as one of Putin's closest financial allies, alleging that he manages substantial portions of the Russian economy for the president. The investigation calls upon the European Union to impose sanctions on individuals and companies connected to the ownership of Ozon, which they assert operates as a proxy for Putin's interests.
