Investigation Underway into PIMS Nursery Fire That Claimed Lives of 14 Infants

The tragic fire at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS), which led to the death of 14 infants, is now under scrutiny by the National Assembly’s Standing Committee on National Health Services. Initial reports suggest the blaze may have stemmed from a 'technical fault', although the exact cause remains elusive.

Health Minister Mustafa Kamal previously indicated that a spark from an air conditioner could have ignited the fire. However, committee chair Mahesh Kumar Malani noted discrepancies in accounts from medical staff. Some suggested the air conditioner was not operational, while others mentioned a potential spark from a bundle of wires. Malani emphasized, “One thing is final, no one knows the source of the fire.”

Adding to the complexity, Malani raised concerns over the nursery's suitability, pointing out that it was housed in a building constructed in 1990. “This was supposed to be a gynae ward, and the babies should have been kept in the new block which was well-equipped,” he stated, criticizing the decision to use such an outdated facility.

The committee plans to hold a meeting to gather further information, including the frequency of fire drills conducted at PIMS and the results of the last fire safety audit. MNA Gul Asghar Khan also highlighted the need for clarity regarding whether the hospital staff was present during the incident.

Malani reiterated the necessity of consulting technical experts to ascertain if there were faults in the oxygen pipes or electrical wiring. He expressed concern over conflicting testimonies from staff, noting that “it appeared as if they had been told what to say.”

Demands for accountability have surfaced, with MNA Shazia Sobia Aslam Soomro calling for the resignation of both the PIMS executive director and the health minister on moral grounds. The committee intends to ensure that an objective inquiry is conducted to uncover the truth behind the fire.

Malani concluded by stating that the committee will probe whether qualified personnel were appointed to oversee the nursery’s operations. Questions regarding the budget allocation for PIMS’ Mother and Child Health Care Centre and the maintenance of the nursery have also been raised, indicating a broader concern about safety protocols within the facility.
