Iran's Military Response to U.S. Economic Warfare: A Strategic Overview

By Editor • August 22, 2026 • 2 min read

As tensions escalate between Iran and the United States, Tehran is reassessing its military strategies in light of aggressive U.S. economic measures aimed at undermining the Iranian government. President Donald Trump recently characterized the impending economic sanctions as the "most crushing economic operation" ever directed at Iran, signaling an era of unprecedented economic warfare.

In response, Iranian military leaders have been strategizing ways to counter these threats. Ahmad Vahdi, commander-in-chief of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), emphasized the importance of intelligent solutions to neutralize perceived enemy plots. On Iran’s National Day of Defence Industry, Ali Abdollahi, chief of staff of the armed forces, celebrated what he termed a "deterrent defensive industrial revolution" in domestic weapon production.

Despite this progress, Iranian authorities have opted for limited public displays of new military capabilities. The Ministry of Defence's spokesman, Reza Talaei-Nik, noted that this approach aims to surprise adversaries while maintaining confidentiality about Iran's defense capabilities. He claimed that following the 12-day conflict with Israel and the U.S. in June 2025, Iran's weapon production had doubled, and after the current conflict began on February 28, 2026, production of key military items had tripled.

Iran has a robust network of over 9,300 companies involved in weapon manufacturing, which officials believe would withstand U.S. and Israeli strikes. Moreover, despite reports that U.S. forces have significantly diminished Iran's defense-industrial base, a confidential U.S. intelligence assessment indicated that Iran retains a significant portion of its mobile launchers and missile inventory.

Military experts suggest that Iran has leveraged its geographically dispersed underground facilities to continue producing weaponry, even as above-ground operations faced destruction. While Iranian air defenses struggled against U.S. incursions, some smaller systems achieved notable interceptions, including downing advanced U.S. drones. As the conflict unfolds, Iran’s military remains on high alert for potential ground operations by the U.S.
