Iraq Secures Passage for Oil Tankers Through Hormuz from Iran

By Editor • August 22, 2026 • 1 min read

In a significant development, Iran has granted permission for several Iraqi oil tankers to navigate the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial maritime route for oil exports. This move comes after persistent requests from Baghdad, particularly during Iranian parliament speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf’s recent visit to Iraq.

Iraqi President Nizar Amidi confirmed that Iran has recently facilitated the passage of ships carrying Iraqi oil. He emphasized Iraq’s commitment to ensuring its territory is not used for attacks on neighboring countries, highlighting the importance of regional stability amid ongoing conflicts.

Amidi remarked at the Baghdad Dialogue policy conference that the situation in the Strait of Hormuz impacts global interests, stating, "Everyone is keen to prevent Iraq from being dragged into the ongoing war in the region." Meanwhile, analysts suggest that Iran's decision to allow Iraqi tankers reflects its strategic relationship with Baghdad, especially as Iran seeks to counter U.S. influence in the region.

Despite these developments, the overall situation in the Strait remains precarious, with ongoing discussions between Iran and Oman regarding reopening efforts. Experts note that the Iranian naval blockade continues to hinder traffic, with many vessels still facing risks in the area. Iraq, which produced around 4 million barrels of oil daily before recent conflicts, is also exploring alternative export routes through Turkey, Syria, and Jordan.
