Jacob Whiteduck-Lavoie, the star of the Prime Video series 'Sterling Point', describes his time on set as reminiscent of a childhood summer camp, where every day felt like the "best day ever." At just 23, Lavoie has been acting since he was a child, landing his first role a decade ago after his mother spotted a casting call for indigenous child actors who spoke French. Despite his initial nerves, he quickly fell in love with the craft during the shoot of his first indie film.
Growing up in the Kitigan Zibi Anishinabeg First Nation in Quebec, Lavoie has a rich cultural heritage that influences his work. While he gained recognition in French-speaking productions and led the Canadian show 'Premier Trio', he aspired to break into the English-speaking market, which he describes as significantly smaller.
'Sterling Point' represents a pivotal moment in Lavoie’s career, allowing him to work alongside industry veterans like Jeffrey Dean Morgan, who plays his on-screen father. Lavoie recalls his excitement upon learning Morgan would portray his dad, stating, “I couldn’t believe it. I was a fan of 'The Walking Dead' as a kid.”
The chemistry among the young cast, which includes Ella Rubin as Annie and several other fresh faces, was immediate. Lavoie, who was previously the oldest actor in his last series, felt rejuvenated being part of a younger ensemble where he was one of the youngest. “It was like we were just this tight group of friends,” he shared, describing their off-set activities, including playing pickleball together.
Working under the direction of Megan Park, who created and helmed the series, Lavoie felt a unique sense of freedom. He appreciated Park’s open-minded approach to script improvisation, which encouraged the actors to bring their authentic voices to the dialogue. “She has a ‘young soul’ that makes anyone feel like her best friend,” he said, noting her ability to ease his initial anxieties.
As the series has just premiered, Lavoie is hopeful for a second season, expressing a desire to relive the experience. With 'Sterling Point' gaining traction for its relatable dialogue and vibrant cast, the young actor’s journey in the industry is just beginning.
