The trailer for James McAvoy's directorial debut, California Schemin', showcases a riveting tale of deception set in the early 2000s. This film, produced by Bob Yari's Magenta Light Studios, follows Scottish rappers Gavin Bain and Billy Boyd as they infiltrate the American hip-hop scene by masquerading as Californians.
In the trailer, record label executive Anthony Reed, played by McAvoy, is lured by their ruse, confidently proclaiming, "We would like to sign you. You’re the next D12, the next Eminem." Based on Bain's autobiography, also titled California Schemin', the story has roots in Bain's transformation into a Californian persona, leading to unexpected fame and encounters with hip-hop icons.
Alongside McAvoy, the film features talents like Lucy Halliday, Samuel Bottomley, and Séamus McLean Ross. McAvoy expressed long-standing aspirations to direct, stating, "I’ve wanted to direct since I was 16," underlining his desire to share stories of underprivileged youth with dreams beyond their circumstances. California Schemin' premiered at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival and has received praise for its engaging storytelling.
