Japan Plans Support Agency for Retired Military Personnel by 2027

In a move to enhance support for veterans, Japan's Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi is spearheading plans to establish a dedicated agency for retired Self-Defense Forces (SDF) members and their families, targeting fiscal 2027 for its launch.
Koizumi initiated an internal review in June to explore ways to consolidate existing support systems, currently fragmented across several departments. The proposed agency, likely named the "retired SDF personnel and family support agency," aims to streamline assistance and provide a centralized resource for veterans transitioning to civilian life.
Key areas of focus include improving the social standing of veterans' families, revising post-retirement benefits, and offering guidance for wounded personnel. Koizumi emphasized the need for an environment where these individuals feel pride in their service, stating, "We need to create an environment in which retired SDF personnel and their families can live out their lives with pride and their heads held high." The initiative also seeks to make military careers more appealing amid a projected 10% to 15% decline in SDF personnel over the next decade.
