Kenneth Branagh, known more for his dramatic roles, is stepping into the action genre with his latest film, 'Mayday.' The Apple TV project, set against the backdrop of the Cold War, features Branagh as a former KGB operative alongside Ryan Reynolds. At the Edinburgh International Film Festival, Branagh shared insights on preparing for his action-filled role.

Branagh revealed that he consulted with the directors about how to approach his character’s physicality. His commitment led him to arrive early for shoot preparations, focusing on flexibility and advanced choreography to convincingly portray a ‘lethal KGB operative.’ “The stunt guy said: ‘We’ve never had an actor for this long,’” Branagh recalled, admitting, “I’m that scared,” but ultimately found the experience “very, very interesting and fun.”

In addition to the film's intense scenes, the two stars found common ground off-screen through their shared passion for soccer. Branagh, a lifelong Tottenham Hotspur supporter, expressed admiration for Reynolds, who co-owns Wrexham with Rob McElhenney. “That was a source of fascination, at how they were living the dream,” he said, noting the journey of Wrexham from non-league football to the Championship.

Branagh was in Edinburgh not only to promote 'Mayday' but also to receive a prestigious award for his outstanding contribution to cinema. During the event, he took a moment to reminisce about working with a young Kate Winslet on 'Hamlet,' recalling her unique presence and the pivotal moment when she received the call for 'Titanic.' “I hope it wasn’t a depressing thing to hear!” he quipped.
