Lenín Moreno Receives 5-Year Sentence for Corruption

Lenín Moreno, the former president of Ecuador, has been sentenced to five years in prison for his involvement in a corruption scheme linked to a Chinese company's hydroelectric project. The court found him guilty of accepting bribes while serving as vice president under Rafael Correa.

Present during the verdict, the 73-year-old Moreno, who has a physical disability, will serve his sentence under house arrest. His family members, including his wife and daughter, also faced convictions, receiving 30-month sentences as accomplices.

Moreno is the third former Ecuadorian president to face legal repercussions for corruption, following Correa, who was sentenced to eight years in 2020, and Jamil Mahuad, who received a similar sentence in 2014. The corruption network operated between 2008 and 2018, with bribes amounting to 4% of the value of the Coca Codo Sinclair hydroelectric plant project.
