Foluso Omole, a 38-year-old dual citizen of Australia and Nigeria, has been denied bail after being arrested for his alleged role in a $5 million fraud scheme involving the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).
During a hearing at the Adelaide Magistrates Court, prosecutors revealed that Omole had purchased a one-way ticket to Nigeria and was preparing to leave the country when authorities apprehended him at Adelaide Airport on Friday. The court was informed that he had severed ties in Adelaide and had been transferring substantial sums of money back to Nigeria, where his wife lives.
Omole, who was working as an NDIS coordinator and managed two businesses, allegedly misused confidential information obtained from an employee of the National Disability Insurance Agency over six years to fraudulently claim benefits. His defense attorney, Mark Twiggs, argued that Omole had originally intended to use a return ticket to London, purchased before the investigation began.
However, Magistrate Patrick Hill concluded that Omole posed a significant flight risk, stating the nature of the ticket—whether one-way or return—was crucial to the court's assessment, leading to the refusal of his bail application.
