Microsoft is taking significant steps to simplify its AI offerings by merging its two Copilot applications into a single platform, aiming to reduce user confusion and enhance the experience for all users. This consolidation will unify the consumer-friendly Copilot with the professional-focused Microsoft 365 Copilot into one cohesive app.
The transition means that whether you’re using Copilot casually like ChatGPT or in a workplace environment with Microsoft Word and Excel, you’ll now have a singular app to navigate. This change is particularly beneficial for users who have been toggling between the two versions, as highlighted by The Verge.
Current users of Microsoft 365 Copilot will find that the update is straightforward, requiring only a minor navigational adjustment. A new app icon and direct access to Copilot chat functionalities will be introduced. Meanwhile, personal account users will experience more changes during the transition, especially on desktop, although mobile users should be able to update seamlessly. Rest assured, all chats and content will migrate to the new app, ensuring continuity.
However, not all features are making the cut. Microsoft has announced the discontinuation of three specific features—Podcasts, Deep Research, and Group Chat messages—effective August 18. Users relying on Group Chat should back up any important messages before the deadline, as they will no longer be accessible afterward. While Deep Research will remain available only to Microsoft 365 Premium subscribers, users looking for alternatives can explore options like Google’s Gemini Notebook for podcast generation.
