In a decisive parliamentary vote, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has been elected as Bangladesh's new president, following the resignation of Mohammed Shahabuddin due to health issues. The 78-year-old veteran of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) secured 255 votes against 88 for his opponent, Oli Ahmed, leader of the Liberal Democratic Party.
Alamgir's election follows the BNP's resurgence after the fall of the Awami League government in 2024, a change prompted by youth-led protests. As he prepares to take office, Alamgir has expressed his vision for a prosperous state that prioritizes marginalized communities and daily wage earners.
Having joined the BNP in the early 1990s, Alamgir has been a prominent political figure, known for his leadership during the 1969 uprising against military rule. His extensive political experience includes roles as local government minister and minister of agriculture, aviation, and tourism.
