Montevideo Hosts Progressive Congress Amidst Regional Conservative Shift

By Editor • August 21, 2026 • 1 min read

In a significant gathering, over 150 lawmakers and political leaders from 15 countries across the Americas convene at Uruguay's Legislative Palace in Montevideo for the third Pan-American Congress. This event, which runs from Friday to Sunday, aims to unite progressive forces facing a challenging political landscape.

The backdrop for this congress is notably somber, as the last three presidential elections in Latin America have resulted in victories for conservative candidates, including José Antonio Kast in Chile and Keiko Fujimori in Peru. David Adler, the congress's general coordinator and co-founder of the Progressive International, acknowledged the tough times, stating, "We are not arriving in a golden age, but in full recognition of those defeats." He emphasized the importance of candid discussions during closed sessions about both successful strategies and past failures.

Under the theme "Solidarity among peoples, sovereignty among nations," the agenda covers critical topics such as peace, sustainable development, and digital sovereignty. The congress, initiated in 2024 in Bogotá, also aims to recalibrate the power dynamics between the northern and southern regions of the continent.
