Moroccan Authorities Crack Down on Migrants Attempting to Reach Ceuta

In a decisive move to manage migration, Moroccan security forces have detained over 100 individuals attempting to cross into the Spanish exclave of Ceuta. The interceptions occurred near Fnideq, a town just a few kilometers from the border, as tensions rise following a recent surge in arrivals.
This latest operation comes just two weeks after approximately 78,000 migrants reached Ceuta in a chaotic wave, resulting in the tragic loss of 100 lives, according to local officials. Following this influx, Moroccan authorities have heightened security measures amid fears of another mass crossing attempt, rumored on social media for the upcoming weekend.
Most of the detained migrants are reported to be from sub-Saharan Africa. To control the situation, Moroccan police utilized riot gear and tear gas against groups gathered in nearby areas. Government officials have also indicated they are monitoring social media posts that could incite further crossings, threatening legal action against those involved.
In response to the crisis, Spain has bolstered its border security with over 1,500 officers, implementing stricter patrols and barriers. The rising tensions have ignited diplomatic disputes within the EU, with Italy imposing border checks and other nations expressing concern over the situation. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has criticized these measures, asserting that the real issues stem from Morocco, not from Spain's management of the migrants.
