Moroccan Authorities Ramp Up Security to Block Migrants Heading to Ceuta

In a decisive move, Moroccan authorities have thwarted attempts by over 100 migrants aiming to enter the Spanish exclave of Ceuta, according to reports from Moroccan security sources. The interception occurred near the town of Fnideq, situated just a few kilometers from the border.

This action follows a recent surge where approximately 78,000 migrants arrived in Ceuta by sea, resulting in tragic losses, with 100 reported dead. Many of the new arrivals have since returned to Morocco, raising concerns about another potential wave of crossings.

To prevent further attempts, Moroccan forces deployed riot police and utilized tear gas to disperse groups of migrants gathered on nearby hills. In response to social media chatter predicting another mass crossing, Morocco’s government announced it would pursue legal action against those organizing such movements.

On the ground, security measures have intensified significantly, with Spain dispatching more than 1,500 officers to bolster patrols. Enhanced barriers have been erected, and Morocco has reinforced its border with military presence, including navy vessels and drones.

This ongoing crisis has sparked tensions among EU countries, particularly between Italy and Spain, with Italy implementing border checks amidst fears of renewed migration flows, prompting a sharp rebuttal from Spain's Prime Minister.
