Nevada Greenlights Robotaxi Permits for Tesla, Uber, and Waymo

By Editor • August 21, 2026 • 1 min read

The Nevada Transportation Authority has taken a significant step towards the future of urban mobility by approving permits for Tesla, Uber, and Waymo to operate commercial robotaxi services in Clark County, which includes Las Vegas. This decision will potentially allow up to 8,000 autonomous vehicles to navigate the region over the next year.

Tesla is set to deploy the majority, with a permit for 5,000 robotaxis, while both Waymo and Uber can operate 1,000 each, the latter in partnership with Hyundai's Motional and Zoox. However, the actual rollout may fall short of these ambitious figures. Eric Early, Tesla’s Cybercab chief engineer, expressed skepticism about reaching the full quota, estimating that 2,500 vehicles might be a more realistic goal within the year.

This expansion of robotaxi services has sparked concerns among local taxi operators, who argue that it could lead to over-saturation in the transportation market and increased roadway congestion. Kimberly Maxson-Rushton, a lawyer for the Livery Operators Association, highlighted these issues during the NTA meeting, particularly focusing on the impact in the heavily trafficked Golden Triangle area.

In the midst of this debate, Uber has positioned itself as a proponent of a hybrid model, suggesting that a mix of human drivers and robotaxis could ease the transition and manage demand without overwhelming the market. This approach contrasts with Waymo's more aggressive stance on fully autonomous operations.
