New Film Explores Love and Identity in 'I Plant My Hand in the Garden'

The upcoming film 'I Plant My Hand in the Garden' intricately weaves themes of identity and family through the lens of an unconventional love story. Directed by Hoda Taheri and Boris Hadžija, the narrative revolves around Hoda, an Iranian refugee, and Boris, a queer man from Serbia, as they prepare to marry and start a family.

As their wedding approaches, the couple grapples with the complexities of their backgrounds and what it means to be together. The film, which will premiere on September 3 during the Venice Days section of the Venice Film Festival, tackles the pressures of bureaucracy, familial expectations, and personal histories that challenge their bond. The filmmakers aim to explore how traditional roles in marriage and family can be both real and artificially constructed.

The project marks the duo’s first feature-length film after a successful collaboration on a trilogy of short films. They emphasize the importance of their backgrounds in shaping the narrative, stating, “We are less interested in defining what a ‘real’ family or relationship is than in asking what might emerge when we step outside inherited forms.” The film stars both directors alongside Branka Hadžija and Hadi Khanjanpour, with cinematography by Vytautas Katkus. Produced by DFFB in Germany and co-produced with partners from Serbia and the U.S., 'I Plant My Hand in the Garden' promises a rich tapestry of wedding preparations, familial interactions, and emotional discoveries.
