Imran Khan's Party Demands Urgent Cardiac Care as Hospital Fails to Conduct Tests

Imran Khan's political party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), has expressed outrage over the lack of adequate medical care for the former Prime Minister, who is currently imprisoned. According to party spokesperson Sheikh Waqas Akram, the authorities at a state-run hospital failed to conduct a crucial cardiac diagnostic test despite recommendations from medical professionals.
On August 21, 2026, Imran Khan, 73, was taken to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) for an eye procedure and other assessments. Cardiologists had advised a CT Coronary Angiography (CTA) due to concerns over his heart health, particularly given his reported history of heart palpitations and fluctuating blood pressure. However, officials at PIMS claimed the necessary facilities were unavailable, leading to him being returned to Adiala Jail without the test.
In a statement released on August 23, Akram criticized the situation, calling it part of a troubling trend of negligence. He highlighted that Shifa International Hospital has the required facilities for the CTA and demanded that Khan be transferred there immediately. "This cannot be dismissed as an isolated administrative lapse; it reflects a deeply troubling pattern," he stated.
He also pointed out that a Supreme Court order had mandated a comprehensive medical examination at Shifa International Hospital, accusing officials of ignoring this directive by sending Khan to a facility ill-equipped for his needs. "Why was Mr. Khan transferred to a hospital unable or unwilling to perform the procedure?" Akram questioned.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has since formed an inquiry committee to investigate the circumstances surrounding the failed test. Despite this, Akram has expressed skepticism regarding the government’s claims that Khan is receiving adequate medical care, emphasizing that the delays and negligence in his treatment have raised serious concerns.
Since his arrest on August 5, 2023, on corruption charges, Khan has been in custody, where his family and supporters allege his access to medical care, legal counsel, and family visits has been severely restricted. The PTI has made it clear that any further deterioration in Khan’s condition will be the responsibility of the government and relevant authorities.
