New Maritime Link Between Falklands and Chile Promises Economic Boost

By Editor • August 28, 2026 • 1 min read

A new commercial maritime connection between the Falkland Islands and Punta Arenas is set to enhance trade opportunities, spearheaded by the Chilean shipping line Easter Island Naviera (EIN). Lou Ellis, Deputy Managing Director of the Falkland Islands Development Corporation (FIDC), noted the initiative was presented to local leaders during a visit in July.

Liam Short from the Falkland Islands Chamber of Commerce highlighted the proactive approach of EIN, which is uncommon for the region, stating that the shipping company has been eager to address challenges swiftly. “We had to tell them to ease off a bit because they were moving very fast,” Short remarked, emphasizing the need for local resources to keep pace.

Plans for a trade Expo on September 28-29 are also underway, featuring products from both the Falklands and Chile. With around 30 to 40 Chilean companies expected to participate and a delegation of over twenty Falklands businesses attending, Ellis encouraged others to register early for travel support from FIDC.

The first sailing of the new route is tentatively scheduled for November, with expectations of a robust cargo capacity. EIN is prepared to store merchandise for up to 25 days prior to loading. Both Ellis and Short expressed optimism about the community’s potential to maximize this opportunity, with Short confirming that the link is intended to complement existing services rather than compete.
