In a recent interview, Nick Offerman revealed his favorite scene from the Netflix series "Death by Lightning," a moment that showcases the powerful performance of co-star Betty Gilpin. While Offerman plays Chester A. Arthur, the vice president grappling with his identity amid a national crisis, it’s Gilpin's character, Lucretia “Crete” Garfield, who delivers a pivotal slap that propels Arthur toward personal redemption.

Offerman, who approached the scene with humility, shared that he chose it not for his own performance but to highlight Gilpin’s fierce portrayal. “I really don’t like to receive homework assignments like this,” he chuckled, but felt compelled to choose the scene because of its emotional weight and the depth of Gilpin's character.

The scene captures Arthur's moment of reckoning as he returns to the White House in turmoil, haunted by the assassination attempt on President Garfield. With Garfield on the brink of death, Arthur is overwhelmed by self-doubt and guilt. Just when he contemplates resigning from office, Crete steps in with a forceful slap, challenging him to find his nobility. “You read me now and you read me fucking well,” she commands, igniting a transformation in Arthur that Offerman masterfully conveys.

Offerman describes this confrontation as Arthur's “crucible moment,” evident in the emotional journey reflected on his face—from shock to enlightenment. This significant narrative moment is a testament to Offerman's ability to serve the story, enhancing the impact of Gilpin’s portrayal of Crete. "It’s a truly supportive turn, which is exactly what Offerman is nominated for: Best Supporting Actor (in a Limited Series)," the interview noted.

The actor also discussed the collaborative atmosphere on set, where he shared the screen with esteemed talents like Shea Whigham and Matthew Macfadyen. Offerman reflected on the joy of working alongside such a stellar cast, expressing admiration for each actor's unique contribution to the series. He described Macfadyen’s performance as astonishing and a masterclass in acting.

Offerman's journey to portray Chester A. Arthur began with a conversation with producer David Benioff, who initially suggested the role. Despite the physical description of Arthur as a “fat, sinful hog of a man,” Offerman embraced the character's complexity and the opportunity for significant character development throughout the series.

While Offerman admits he struggles with watching his own performances, he appreciates being part of such a compelling narrative. “I don’t love what I’m doing in this scene, but I love that I got picked to participate in this scene,” he stated, highlighting his respect for the artistry of his fellow actors.
