Strong Earthquake Hits Peru's Andes, No Damage Reported

A powerful magnitude 6.7 earthquake struck the southern Andes of Peru on Thursday, August 21, 2026, as reported by the U.S. Geological Survey.

The quake, which occurred at 1 p.m. local time, was centered 38 kilometers northwest of Upahuacho in the Ayacucho region, at a depth of 66.7 kilometers. Residents in southern regions, including Ica and Arequipa, felt the tremors.

Fortunately, there have been no immediate reports of damage following the seismic event, which is part of the Pacific "Ring of Fire" known for its frequent earthquakes.
