Panama Canal Imposes Traffic Limits Amid Severe Drought

The Panama Canal is set to restrict vessel traffic starting September 3 due to a crippling drought exacerbated by the El Nino weather phenomenon.
The Panama Canal Authority announced that daily crossings will decrease from 36 ships to 34, and further to 32 by September 15. This decision is driven by significantly lower rainfall in the watersheds feeding the canal, impacting its operational capacity.
El Nino is known for altering climatic conditions globally, and this year's event is predicted to be one of the strongest in history. The drought's effects are not limited to Panama; Honduras has also declared a drought alert for 80 percent of its territory. As the canal facilitates 5% of global maritime trade and 40% of U.S. container traffic, these restrictions underline the urgent need for water conservation measures.
