Pope Leo XIV has called for urgent international assistance to combat the escalating Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). During his Angelus address in St. Peter's Square on August 23, 2026, he expressed deep concern for the victims of the epidemic.
"In my prayers, I often remember the Democratic Republic of the Congo, especially due to the spread of the Ebola epidemic, which unfortunately is causing many victims," the Pope stated. He stressed the need for a collaborative response from both the international community and local organizations to save lives.
This outbreak, linked to the Bundibugyo strain, is one of the deadliest in the DRC's history, affecting regions with limited health infrastructure and ongoing violence from various armed groups. The Pope also extended condolences to those mourning the victims of a recent mine collapse in the Central African Republic and recalled the anniversary of a devastating earthquake in Italy.
