Japanese e-commerce giant Rakuten Group has teamed up with the German defense startup Helsing to introduce military drones to Japan. Acting as a liaison, Rakuten has facilitated communication between Helsing and the Japanese government, enabling field tests by the Ground Self-Defense Force until the end of September.
This collaboration marks one of Helsing's initial ventures in the Asia-Pacific region, as reported by Nikkei. The Munich-based firm, founded in 2021, has gained traction in military technology, especially following the conflict in Ukraine. Recently, Goldman Sachs valued Helsing at $18 billion.
Among its offerings is the AI-driven HX-2 strike drone, capable of identifying targets independently. Although Helsing has not publicly detailed military contracts outside Germany, its presence is expanding internationally.
