The average surface temperature of the world's oceans has hit an unprecedented peak, raising alarms among scientists as the El Niño phenomenon intensifies. Recent data from the European Union’s Copernicus Climate Change Service reveals that global sea surface temperatures outside polar regions have soared to 21.1°C (70°F), just surpassing the previous record of 21.09°C set in March 2024.
This new record occurs unusually in August, a time when ocean temperatures typically reach their annual high in March or April. The Southern Hemisphere, with its extensive ocean area, significantly influences global averages, making this spike particularly concerning.
As El Niño strengthens, it brings warmer waters to the central and eastern tropical Pacific, further escalating global temperatures and altering weather patterns well beyond the ocean itself. Experts warn that this ongoing event could lead to even higher ocean temperatures by the next seasonal peak expected in March or April 2027.
The implications of rising ocean temperatures extend beyond mere numbers. The oceans absorb over 90% of excess heat from human-induced greenhouse gas emissions, serving as a clear indicator of climate change. Elevated temperatures can intensify storms and disrupt marine ecosystems, leading to effects such as coral bleaching and altered marine food webs. Additionally, warmer seawater expands, contributing to rising sea levels and increasing coastal flooding risks.
Worryingly, the warming trend is not confined to the Pacific; areas like the UK and Europe are also experiencing significant temperature increases. In the western English Channel, marine heatwave conditions have persisted for over three years, with temperatures up to 7°C above average in July. As El Niño continues to strengthen, scientists anticipate ongoing pressure on the world’s oceans.
