Charles Burnett’s filmography is a testament to endurance, particularly for fans who have long awaited the revival of his work. This year, audiences will be treated to a newly restored version of his 1983 film, "My Brother’s Wedding," which has undergone a significant 4K restoration and digital re-edit. The film premiered earlier this year at the Berlin International Film Festival, showcasing Burnett's unique storytelling vision.
In "My Brother’s Wedding," the narrative centers on Pierce Mundy (Everett Silas), a young man entangled in the struggles of life in South Central Los Angeles. Working at his parents’ dry cleaning business, Pierce finds himself at a crossroads, with friends either incarcerated or deceased. The film’s tension escalates when his best friend Soldier (Ronnie Bell) returns from prison, only to face tragedy shortly thereafter. Pierce is torn between attending his brother Wendell's (Monte Easter) wedding and Soldier’s funeral, both occurring on the same day.
Burnett reflects on this moral dilemma, stating, “The story focuses on a young man who hasn’t made much of his life as of yet… he is unable to make the proper decision, a sober decision, a moral decision.” This introspection is the heart of the film, capturing the essence of a young man grappling with familial expectations and societal pressures.
Initially, "My Brother’s Wedding" struggled to find its audience, having premiered at the New Directors/New Films festival in 1983, where it was poorly received due to an edit taken from Burnett without his consent. The film was subsequently shelved until rights were acquired by Milestone Films, which has played a pivotal role in the film's revival.
The newly restored version, now trimmed from 110 minutes to a more concise 81 minutes, aims to more accurately reflect Burnett's original vision. The restoration was a collaborative effort involving the UCLA Film & Television Archive and the Berkeley Art Museum, among others. It will be released by Kino Lorber and Milestone Films at New York's Film Forum on September 18.
