In a powerful demonstration of public concern, approximately 10,000 individuals converged in Stockholm on Sunday to push for more robust climate action just weeks before Sweden’s general election. The rally featured renowned climate activist Greta Thunberg, who criticized the government's lack of decisive policies to combat climate change.
Participants voiced their frustration over the government's perceived weakening of emissions regulations, with many emphasizing the urgency of the climate crisis. Kliff Lindberg, a 21-year-old student, expressed his relief at the large turnout, stating, "That gives me a lot of strength and it's beautiful to see." The rally was organized by a coalition of youth and sports groups, unions, and environmental organizations.
Experts warn that current government policies threaten Sweden’s ambitious climate targets, including a 70 percent reduction in transport-related CO2 emissions by 2030 and achieving net-zero emissions by 2045. Despite these goals, Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson’s right-wing administration has made cuts to petrol taxes and resisted proposals to phase out fossil fuels more aggressively.
