Reno Faces Dire Wildfire Threat as Thousands Evacuate

A rapidly spreading wildfire known as the Hawk Fire has wreaked havoc in northwest Reno, Nevada, forcing the evacuation of approximately 90,000 residents. The fire, which ignited on Saturday, August 24, 2026, has consumed over 60 square kilometers of land in the Humboldt–Toiyabe National Forest, an area characterized by rugged terrain and proximity to residential neighborhoods.

Authorities have reported injuries to at least six individuals, including three first responders. While the fire has been deemed 'human-caused,' specific details about its origins remain undisclosed. As firefighters struggled to contain the blaze amid shifting winds, evacuation orders were expanded to include areas near the University of Nevada.

Washoe County Sheriff Darin Balaam urged residents to evacuate immediately, stating, "Please get out if you can right now." In a heartbreaking account, resident Cari Kieffer described the devastation of her home, which was reduced to ashes while her family rushed to save what they could. "I woke up this morning and just started crying — all my kids, they lost everything," Kieffer lamented.

The Nevada National Guard has been mobilized to assist in firefighting efforts, with two helicopter crews deployed alongside 800 fire personnel. Governor Joe Lombardo declared a state of emergency in Washoe County to facilitate a coordinated response to the disaster. As of Sunday, nearly 10,000 customers in the area were without power, a significant decrease from 60,000 the previous day. Major routes, including portions of U.S. Route 395, have also been closed due to the fire.

To accommodate evacuees, local officials have opened the Reno-Sparks Convention Centre, although residents are advised that pets must be taken to designated facilities. In a show of community support, several casinos in Reno are offering discounted hotel rates for those affected by the fire.
