Reno Faces Night of Uncertainty as Wildfire Forces Evacuations

A destructive wildfire in Reno, Nevada, has forced thousands to flee their homes as the blaze threatens the city with heavy smoke and hazardous conditions. As of Monday, approximately 24,000 residents were still under evacuation orders, a decrease from over 40,000 at the fire’s peak.
The Hawk Fire ignited on Saturday and has rapidly spread to over 15,000 acres. Firefighters have managed to contain around 27% of the fire’s perimeter, which is dangerously close to residential areas, just five miles northwest of Reno.
Injuries have been reported, with seven individuals affected, including three first responders. The fire has destroyed at least 32 homes. Truckee Meadows Fire Chief Richard Edwards noted that the blaze is human-caused, though its exact nature—intentional or accidental—remains under investigation.
More than 900 firefighters, including teams from Australia and New Zealand, are battling the flames using various firefighting techniques. Edwards urged residents to heed evacuation orders promptly, emphasizing the fire's unpredictable nature driven by winds.
