Rethinking Architecture: Designing Spaces for All Species

In the world of architecture, the focus has traditionally been on creating structures tailored primarily for human use. However, a growing trend among contemporary architects is to embrace the idea of designing buildings that accommodate both human inhabitants and the wildlife that can thrive in those environments. This shift reflects a broader understanding of our ecological responsibilities and the potential for architecture to foster biodiversity.
One of the pioneers in this movement is ChartierDalix, whose School of Science and Biodiversity in Boulogne-Billancourt, France, stands as a testament to this vision. Completed in 2014, the building's concrete façade includes intentional ledges, hollows, and crevices that allow for the establishment of plant and animal life. Over the years, ecological surveys have documented an impressive array of 345 species, demonstrating how a structure can evolve into a vibrant ecosystem.
Similarly, the design of Buitenverblijf Nest, a holiday home in Norway by i29 and Namo Architecture, incorporates wildlife considerations right into its framework. Resembling a giant birdhouse, the building boasts deep facades that create nesting spaces for birds and bats, while the elevated design allows for space beneath for other creatures. This thoughtful architecture not only provides a cozy retreat for its human occupants but also nurtures a habitat for local wildlife.
In Sweden, the Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) took this concept to new heights with their Biosphere at Treehotel, a glass hotel room enveloped by 350 birdhouses. Developed in collaboration with ornithologist Ulf Öhman, the structure's design prioritizes the needs of avian inhabitants, allowing them to coexist alongside human guests. This innovative approach transforms the traditional hotel experience into one where both species share the space.
Moving beyond the single-building concept, Andrés Jaque’s Rambla Climate-House in Spain showcases how architecture can actively restore local ecosystems. Located in a suburban area where natural ravines have been disrupted, this home integrates rainwater collection and utilizes sensors to maintain ecological balance, inviting wildlife back into the area within a year of its completion.
Further emphasizing this ecological integration is the Reggio School, also designed by Jaque. With its exterior wrapped in a rough layer of projected cork, the school is designed to support microbial and animal life, effectively redefining the role of building materials in fostering biodiversity.
On a larger scale, MVRDV's project De Oosterlingen in Amsterdam presents an entire residential block designed with biodiversity in mind. Each of the seven buildings offers unique ecological opportunities, providing habitats for various species like bees and bats. This approach not only enriches the community but also challenges conventional ideas of residential design by introducing a new layer of ecological diversity.
Lastly, Henning Larsen’s Fælledby in Copenhagen stretches this vision to an entire district, preserving significant portions of land for wildlife while integrating green corridors to facilitate animal movement. This ambitious project underscores the importance of rethinking urban design in a way that harmonizes human living spaces with nature.
These innovative examples highlight a crucial paradigm shift in architecture, where the needs of nonhuman residents are becoming integral to the design process. As architects continue to explore this symbiotic relationship, the built environment can evolve into a thriving habitat for all forms of life, ultimately enriching our urban landscapes.
