Harmonizing Heritage and Innovation: The Slur House in Tokyo

The suburbs of Tokyo have welcomed a striking architectural addition known as the Slur House, a project designed by Yohei Ikai of icai architects. This detached annex not only enhances a 15-year-old residence but also embodies a dialogue between the past and the present, drawing inspiration from the musical term 'slur' to symbolize a seamless connection between two distinct homes.

Situated in a rapidly developing neighborhood, Slur House expands the existing lot while maintaining a thoughtful distance from the original structure. The new design reflects the family's evolving needs, particularly as children seek greater independence while still remaining visually linked to their parents' home. The annex preserves key characteristics from the original house, such as a nearly square layout, a pointed roof, and simple white exteriors, creating a harmonious relationship between the two buildings.

One of the most notable features of the annex is its innovative use of light. The ridge beam is strategically shifted toward the original house, elevating the ceiling and drawing attention to the main residence. A high-side window captures sunlight that bounces off the large white wall of the existing structure, transforming a previously overlooked rear elevation into a brilliant source of illumination for the annex. This design cleverly integrates the gap between the two homes as both a physical divide and a conduit for natural light.

Inside, Slur House boasts a compact yet rich spatial arrangement that includes two lofts and freestanding columns. The layout is meticulously crafted to cater to the family's daily activities, with windows aligned to enhance interaction with the southern garden. Collaborating with textile designer some/to, the architects created gradient curtains that unify the varying window dimensions, allowing for dynamic changes in light and atmosphere throughout the day.

Additionally, the family participated in the creation of custom furniture, designed in conjunction with the architect. This DIY approach not only strengthens their connection to the space but also utilizes sustainable materials, demonstrating a commitment to both functionality and environmental responsibility.
