Reviving Industry: Eskom's New Pricing Strategy Promises Economic Rebirth

Eskom is embarking on a transformative journey, aiming to rejuvenate South Africa's industrial sector with a fresh pricing model designed to relieve consumers while revitalizing heavy industry. At a briefing on August 18, Minister of Electricity and Energy, Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, highlighted a stark reality: only 11 of the 66 smelters that once contributed to the nation's economy are still operational, representing a mere 17% utilization rate.
With the introduction of this new pricing framework, the government anticipates that the number of operational smelters will rise to 49 by 2027, achieving a 74% utilization rate. This ambitious objective is expected to generate over 11,000 direct jobs and more than 121,000 indirect jobs.
However, not everyone is celebrating. Transalloys, the last manganese smelter in the country, recently halted operations, jeopardizing 600 jobs and significant investments. CEO Konstantin Sadovnik expressed cautious optimism regarding the new policy but warned that immediate solutions are crucial to avoid further crises for companies like his.
Ramokgopa defended the new tariff approach, stating it would not only preserve tax-paying industries but also ultimately benefit the national treasury by approximately R5.5 billion. He emphasized that this reform is not a plea for additional funding but rather a strategy to enhance competitiveness against international rivals like China.
Eskom’s CEO, Dan Marokane, echoed these sentiments, noting that maintaining smelter operations is vital for the utility’s revenue. Board chair Mteto Nyati hailed the initiative as a pivotal step toward sustained industrial growth. As the government aims to turn Eskom from a constraint into a catalyst for economic expansion, the focus now shifts to the effective implementation of this plan to ignite South Africa's industrial revival.
