Japan Dismisses Proposal to Recruit Foreign Nationals for Military Strengthening

In a decisive move, Japan has rejected a proposal suggesting the recruitment of foreign nationals to address the anticipated decline in its Self-Defence Forces (SDF). The proposal, presented by the Sasakawa Peace Foundation, emerged from a report authored by a panel of former senior defence officials and military leaders.
The report, which was released on September 2, raises concerns about the future of Japan's military capabilities, projecting a potential reduction of SDF personnel to just 130,000 by the year 2045. This figure represents nearly a 50% decrease from the current strength, sparking debates about the future of national defense.
Despite the mixed reactions to the proposal, ranging from support to criticism, Japan’s Defence Minister Shinjiro Koizumi quickly put an end to discussions surrounding foreign recruitment, emphasizing the importance of relying on domestic personnel for the nation's defense.
