Revolutionary Excavator Interface Simplifies Operation

By Editor • August 25, 2026 • 1 min read

Operating mini-excavators can be daunting, with a steep learning curve due to complex joystick controls. Recognizing this challenge, engineers at MIT have teamed up with Japan's Sumitomo to create an innovative user interface.

The new design features an articulated metal arm with a grab handle, enabling operators to replicate their natural arm movements, making the operation more intuitive. "This is a more intuitive way to command the machine," stated Hermano Krebs, a principal research scientist at MIT.

In tests, new operators trained with the World-Space Interface (WSI) performed as well as experienced users, a significant improvement over traditional controls. The team plans to enhance the WSI with haptic feedback to further improve the user experience.
