Rising SUP Fatalities Linked to Common Safety Gear: Experts Warn

By Editor • August 27, 2026 • 2 min read

Stand-up paddleboarding (SUP) is experiencing a troubling surge in fatalities, with deaths quadrupling in the last five years. Experts are pointing fingers at the very safety device many consider essential: the ankle leash.

Data from American Whitewater reveals a startling increase in SUP-related deaths, with incidents rising from three fatalities between 2015 and 2020 to at least twelve from 2020 to July 2026. In Oregon alone, five fatalities have been attributed to ankle leashes in SUP accidents since 2020. The organization is now alerting paddlers to reconsider their use of ankle leashes in moving waters.

Evan Stafford, a representative from American Whitewater, strongly advises against wearing ankle leashes while paddling on rivers. He cautions that these leashes can become entangled in underwater obstacles, making it nearly impossible for a paddler to free themselves from the current. “Any type of leash can become entangled in rocks or wood debris in the river,” Stafford remarked. “Reaching back upstream to release it in the current is often impossible.”

Barry Hughes, a whitewater paddleboard coach, echoes these concerns, noting that most commercially available SUP kits come with ankle leashes designed for calmer waters like lakes and oceans. In contrast, rivers flow in one direction, and an ankle leash can pin a paddler’s ankle to an obstacle, creating a life-threatening situation. He likens the struggle to breathe while trying to reach for a stuck ankle to performing sit-ups against a strong current.

As SUP grows in popularity, with around 4 million participants enjoying the sport across various water bodies, the associated risks are becoming more apparent. Experts recommend using a quick-release waist leash as a safer alternative. This design allows paddlers to detach quickly if they get stuck. “A waist leash should be the standard in SUP packages, especially for beginners,” Hughes asserts.

In addition to using the right gear, experts stress the importance of training and understanding the water conditions before paddling. Wearing a properly fitted life jacket and educating oneself about potential hazards are crucial steps for ensuring safety while enjoying this popular water activity.
