Round Hill Music Takes Legal Action Against AI Firms for Copyright Breach

By Editor • August 18, 2026 • 1 min read

Round Hill Music has initiated a federal lawsuit against AI companies Suno and Anthropic, alleging that they unlawfully scraped over 10,000 of its songs to develop their technology. The publisher, known for iconic tracks like Bonnie Tyler’s "Total Eclipse of the Heart" and the Goo Goo Dolls’ "Iris," claims this action violates the Copyright Act.

The lawsuit specifies 500 songs involved in the alleged infringement, but the company has indicated that the final count could exceed 10,000. Round Hill is seeking damages that could amount to hundreds of millions, potentially hitting or surpassing $1 billion.

CEO Josh Gruss emphasized that the issue isn’t with AI itself but with the exploitation of creative works without compensation. He stated, “Licensing isn’t an obstacle to innovation – it is there to protect the legal owners of the raw material.” The case adds to a growing list of legal challenges faced by Suno and Anthropic, as the music industry grapples with the implications of AI on copyright.

Round Hill's legal representation, Richard S. Busch, noted the disparity between the wealth generated by these companies and the lack of remuneration for creators, asserting their commitment to pursuing the case in court.
