In a captivating return to competitive tennis, Serena Williams and Carlos Alcaraz showcased their talent in the US Open mixed doubles, delighting a packed crowd at Arthur Ashe Stadium. With around 15,000 fans in attendance, the duo marked Williams' return to the US Open after a four-year hiatus and Alcaraz's first match since April following a wrist injury.
The pair's journey began with a strong performance against Lloyd Glasspool and Erin Routliffe, as they dominated the court to win 5-3, 4-1. For Williams, the moment was a nostalgic return to a venue where she had previously triumphed in mixed doubles back in 1998, while Alcaraz expressed his excitement to play alongside the legendary athlete. "I’m playing next to the one and only Serena Williams, so what else can I do? Just enjoy and try to do the things she told me to do," he said during a change of ends.
Despite their spirited start, the duo's run came to an end in the quarter-finals against Italy's Flavio Cobolli and Switzerland's Belinda Bencic, who won convincingly with a score of 5-4 (7-4), 4-1. Alcaraz, who had been sidelined for nearly five months, admitted to feeling nervous before stepping on the court, especially alongside a six-time US Open champion. "I was out for almost five months and I almost forgot how it feels stepping out on the court once again," Alcaraz reflected.
The mixed doubles format, which has drawn criticism for favoring high-profile singles players over seasoned doubles teams, nonetheless created an electrifying atmosphere. While established doubles pairs struggled, the singles stars emerged victorious, with none of the four doubles specialist teams advancing to the semi-finals.
Looking back on her unexpected return, Williams shared her joy at being back on such a prestigious stage. "It’s always amazing to be here. I never expected to be back on this court. It was just a really cool moment. I never thought this would happen," she remarked.
