Soaring Supermarket Prices: A Closer Look at Inflation's Impact
By Editor • August 19, 2026 • 1 min read
Recent analysis reveals that staple supermarket items such as olive oil, beef, and eggs have experienced significant price increases amid the ongoing cost-of-living crisis. Inflation rose to 2.9% last month, its highest rate since March, driven by escalating energy costs linked to the Middle East conflict.
Since the crisis began five years ago, cumulative inflation has surged by 28%, according to the Office for National Statistics. Olive oil has been particularly hard hit, with prices more than doubling—up 116%—due to a combination of poor harvests and rising energy expenses. Experts predict that drought conditions in Europe this summer will further exacerbate the situation.
Other notable price hikes include beef, which rose by 61.3%, and offal, which skyrocketed by 75.8%. Pasta and chocolate also saw increases of 54.9% and 51.2%, respectively. Interestingly, only 14 out of 192 categories in the Consumer Price Index have become cheaper since July 2021, highlighting the widespread nature of these cost increases.
