Paramount-Warner Bros. Merger Threatens Thousands of Jobs in L.A.

The proposed merger between Paramount and Warner Bros. could lead to significant job losses in the Los Angeles film and television sector, with estimates suggesting a cut of around 4,500 positions over the next three years. A report from CVL Economics, commissioned by L.A. County, highlights the merger's potential to exacerbate an already declining production environment that has seen 52,000 jobs vanish in the past four years.
According to the report, the consolidation could force the new entity to streamline operations, likely shifting production away from Los Angeles, which would reduce independent commissioning options, particularly in unscripted and reality programming. The ripple effect of these job losses could extend beyond the industry, impacting a total of 10,360 jobs across the local economy.
Paramount responded to the findings by emphasizing the industry's struggles, asserting that the merger could ultimately lead to a stronger company capable of producing more content. They plan to invest $30 billion annually and release at least 30 films per year to revitalize the sector.
The merger is currently on hold pending a trial set for March 2027 concerning an antitrust lawsuit from a coalition of states, while the Writers Guild of America also raises concerns about diminished opportunities for creators.
