SpaceX's Satellite Plans Raise E-Waste Concerns

By Editor • August 20, 2026 • 1 min read

Elon Musk's ambitious vision of a million AI satellite constellation could introduce a new category of electronic waste. While the idea of launching data centers into orbit is innovative, it raises significant sustainability questions.

Currently, the commercial space industry discusses asteroid mining for resources, but Musk's plan may reverse this trend by sending materials into space.

With a projected lifespan of about five years, approximately 200,000 of these satellites would be decommissioned annually, resulting in about 40,000 satellites deorbiting and burning up in the atmosphere. This process risks dispersing valuable materials and contributing to ozone depletion.
